Days of the Week

hétfő	kedd	szerda	csütörtök	péntek	szombat	vasárnap

To express time on a specific day, we use the superessive case (-(o/ö/e)n). Revisit vowel harmony if you aren’t sure which version of this suffix to add.

Note: “vasárnap” does NOT take this case. It just stays “vasárnap”. The only exception is if we are using the definite articles “ez” (this) or “az” (that). In that case, for example, it would be “azon a vasárnapon” (on that Sunday).

Hétfőn találkozunk a barátunkkal. (We are meeting with our friend on Monday)

If you want to express a recurring event:

Hetfőnként találkozunk a barátunkkal. (We meet with our friend on Mondays) – the “ként” addition specifies that this is something that regularly occurs on that day of the week, and not just a one time occurance.

The weekend – hétvége

This takes the same case as the days of the week.

Ezen a hétvégen sok filmet nézek. (I will watch a lot of movies this weekend)

To express time on a specific month, we use -ban/-ben.

Júliusban nagyon meleg. (It is very warm in July)

Novemberben megyek Párizsba. (I am going to Paris in November)

The cases used for the seasons varies.

tavasz/ősz: -val/-vel

Ősszel kezdődik a tanév. (The school year begins in the fall)

Tavasszal megyünk Görögországba. (We go to Greece in the Spring)

nyár/tél: -(o/ö/e)n

Nyáron nem kell iskolába menni. (You don’t have to go to school in the summer)

Télen esni szokott a hó. (It usually snows in the winter)
