Certain postpositions require the relative object to take a specific case. This is not necessarily a comprehensive list, but I’ll be going over some of these and showing how they work.
Át OR Keresztül – across, through
Takes: superessive case -(o/e/ö)n
Szeretnék utazni a világon át/keresztül (I would like to travel across the world)
Az ablakomon át/keresztül látok egy kutyát (I see a dog through my window)
A gyerekek a szekrényen át/keresztül mennek Narniába (The children go to Narnia through the wardrobe)
Napokon át/keresztül vártam a vizsga eredményeit (I waited for the test results for days)
Belül – within
Takes: superessive case -(o/e/ö)n
Hét percen belül kezdődik az óra (The class will begin within 7 minutes)
A nyomozás végéig a városon belül kell maradnia (Until the investigation is over, you must stay within the city)
Az az étel csak Magyarországon belül elérhető (That food is only available (with)in Hungary)
Innen1 – on this side of
Takes: superessive case -(o/e/ö)n
Egy kert van a házon innen (There is a garden on this side of the house)
A folyón innen szeretnék halászni (I would like to fish on this side of the river)
Sok bolt van az utcán innen (There are a lot of shops on this side of the street)
1This is a different usage than the “innen” that pairs with honnan and is used to mean ‘from here’
Kívül – besides, except for, apart from
Takes: superessive case -(o/e/ö)n
A matek órán kívül szeretem az iskolát (I love school, except for math class)
Mindenkit láttam a tanáron kívül (I saw everyone except for the teacher)
Mindenhová szeretnék utazni, Németországon kívül (I would like to travel everywhere, except for Germany)
A barátaimon kívül, senki sem hallgat rám (Besides my friends, no one listens to me)
Túl – beyond
Takes: superessive case -(o/e/ö)n
A városon túl van egy sivatag (There is a desert beyond the city)
A fákon túl látok egy állatot (I see an animal beyond the trees)
A folyón túl van egy mező (There is a field beyond the river)
Nézve – with respect to, concerning
Takes: sublative case -ra/-re
Folytassuk most az eljárást a gyerekekre nézve (Let’s now continue the proceedings concerning the children)
This postposition is rarely used aside from formal documents or legal language, so you won’t encounter or use it that often.
Nézve – as seen from
Takes: delative -ról/-ről OR elative -ból/-ből
Az ablakból1 nézve látok egy cicát (I can see a cat from the window – lit. ‘(by) looking from the window’)
1For ablak (window) and ajtó (door), you will use -ból/-ből instead of -ról/-ről. In general, if the location you are seeing from is inside somewhere, then you will use -ból/-ből.
A házból nézve nagyon szép a vihar (The storm is very beautiful (as) seen from the house)
A hegyről nézve a város nagyon kicsinek tűnik (As seen from the mountain, the city looks very small)
Hasonló – similar to
Takes: allative -hoz/-hez/-höz
A házad egy kastélyhoz hasonló (Your house is similar to a castle)
Sosem láttam valamit ehhez hasonlót (I’ve never seen anything like this)
Az akcentusod egy magyar emberéhez hasonló (Your accent is similar to that of a Hungarian person)
Anyukám azt mondja, hogy én az apámhoz vagyok hasonló (My mom says that I am similar to my dad)
Képest – compared to
Takes: allative -hoz/-hez/-höz
Hozzád képest, én nagyon gyorsan futok (Compared to you, I run really fast)
Ahhoz a bolthoz képest, ezek az árak túl drágák (Compared to that shop, these prices are too expensive)
A testvéremhez képest, nem tudok jól rajzolni (Compared to my sibling, I can’t draw well)
Együtt – together (with)
Takes: instrumental case -val/-vel
Moziba megyek az anyámmal együtt (I am going to the cinema (together) with my mother)
A barátommal együtt utazom Londonba (I am traveling to London (together) with my boyfriend)
Szemben – opposite to, facing
Takes: instrumental case -val/-vel
Ezzel szemben (On the other hand) – (lit. ‘opposite to this’)
A tanárral szemben ülök le (I sit down opposite/facing the teacher)
A nagymamám velünk szemben lakik (My grandmother lives opposite/across from us)
